Vestland: National Geographic’s Best Of The World 2027

Back To The Journal

National Geographic has named Vestland, Norway, among its Best of the World destinations for 2027. Here is what the recognition celebrates — and how the region rewards time spent on the water.

Why Vestland Made The 2027 List

In its Best of the World 2027 selection, National Geographic highlights Vestland, the county in southwestern Norway whose deep fjords and high mountains, in the magazine’s words, look like something out of a Tolkien novel.

The region is also recognised as a global leader in sustainable outdoor adventure, with noiseless, zero-emission boats that glide through the fjord landscape — a direction that suits private charters beautifully.

Bergen: The Region’s Capital

Bergen anchors the region with the UNESCO-listed Bryggen wharf, cobbled alleys and brightly painted timber buildings that recall the Hanseatic era. The Hanseatic Museum, which tells that merchant story, reopens in 2027 after a major renovation.

The table is part of the appeal too: restaurant Gaptrast earned its second Michelin star in 2026, and the Bergen International Festival brings world-class orchestras to the city from late May to early June in its 75th anniversary year.

Fjords, Glaciers And Great Walks

National Geographic singles out the Nærøyfjord, perhaps the most beautiful of Norway’s glacier-carved inlets, where rock walls soar some 5,900 feet above prismatic blue water and seals, porpoises and white-tailed eagles are part of the scenery.

Farther afield lie Jostedalsbreen, crowned by Europe’s biggest glacier, and Folgefonna national park, while the Trolltunga rock formation — the “troll’s tongue” — rewards a demanding full-day trek above Ringedalsvatnet lake.

When To Go — And How We Can Help

Summer brings long, bright days for fjord cruising, kayaking and wildlife watching, with whales and sea eagles at their most active. Spring, autumn and winter each set a different, quieter mood over the same landscape.

We are delighted to see Vestland receive this recognition. Our Bergen and the fjords destination page is the natural starting point: tell us your dates and the experience you have in mind, and availability, boats and routes are always confirmed individually in your charter proposal.
